Wonder what these other comments say-lol. Santa Fe is expensive, but in truth, though there are $1,000 a night hotel rooms and there are in any city, that is not the norm, even for the downtown hotels. In high season (June through October) rooms are are more expensive than the rest of the year, but since the economic downturn, there are relative bargains to be had.

Well, I'm only a couple of years late in seeing this.

I was scouting for better pictures of the river, the ones I have that I took are pretty poor, to put on my computer and came across your site.

I lived on the Au Sable from late 40s to early 60s, just below Wakeley Bridge at the end of So Townline Road (about 13 miles east of Grayling). Spent most of my time fly fishing from a canoe. I was pretty lousy but did I love it!

I might be just a tad prejudiced but I've been around a bit and nothin' beats the Au Sable.

Just watched a segment of "In the Footsteps of Alexander the Great," an episode of "Long Way Down" and then read your piece - made me think #1 that I'm watching too much TV and #2 about the difference between a trip and a journey. I think it's easier to start off on a journey and say "this is my goal, to hell with the details" than it is to start off on a trip and say "I'm going to flaunt convention and not research hotels or restaurants before I go." Oh, and I have a weird crush on Ewan McGregor now.

In a blog I follow, "Choosing Santa Fe," the current post relays how New Mexico had the most gunfights in the US in 1880-1884. That was also the period where Doc Holiday and his fellow outlaws hunkered down in Las Vegas, as I talk about above. Clearly, Las Vegas' reputation as being "worse than Dodge City" was deserved - given that the Dodge City Gang had moved there! Check out this blog post for more details - as well as a photo of the tombstone of Billy the Kid, who was killed in New Mexico.

I am happy you've found a place to commit to. As one recent transplant to another, you will be amazed at how easy it is to adapt. It is like a previous life never existed. It will amaze you how much. (recognize the paraphrasing from Mad Men?) I scraped 6" of snow from my car yesterday and was so happy that to experience seasons, something you never get in CA. The people in small towns are nice and not urban cynics. The food, eh. Nothing like CA, but you can go back for that. Congratulations! Can't wait for a visit!
